There are over one hundred chemists in that little holiday town. In Turkey, you do not have to show receipt to get medicines except the ones in high risk group. So if you have the box or the prescription of the medicine you use at home, you can get the same formula here, maybe in a different name without a doctor's prescription. Medicine is much cheaper in Turkey then it is at home, since they are subsidized by the Government. Chemist works 24-7, so feel safe.

There is also a very good health service in Fethiye supported both private and Government Hospitals. Do not for get to take your insurance card with you if you want to get free service in case of an emergency.

Here, we would like to give an example for one of the hospitals we work for years. The reason we put this in our web site is because we would like you to feel safe on your holiday to Fethiye.



Lokman Hekim Esnaf Hospital

This hospital has been open since May 1998 and has 40 beds, including four intensive care cardiac monitored beds two of which have the provision for ventilation. The other beds are either in rooms of one or two beds with private bathroom facilities and some of the rooms have air-conditioning, a fridge, a TV and a sofa bed. Relatives are encouraged to stay overnight if they wish and to be involved in the patient's care.

The specializes that are catered for on site include: General Surgery, Urology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, ENT, Cardiology, General Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Dentistry, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Anaesthetics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Psychiatry.

There are two operating theatres on site with autoclave facilities and the majority of operations covered by the above specializes can be undertaken, including laparoscopic surgery. The anaesthetist department has an anaesthetist who speaks excellent English and is able to offer epidural, spinal and nerve block facilities as well as general anaesthesia, allowing many of the cases to be undertaken as day cases with effective analgesic control. Other invasive investigations include rectos copy and colonoscopy,

There is a 24 hour on site laboratory undertaking microbiology, haematology and biochemical investigations. there are also ultrasound and radiology departments catering for the above specializes with prompt reporting facilities.

We have also employed an English nurse for the purpose of assisting foreign patients, raising the standard of nursing care, as well as to improve communication between the hospital staff and foreign patients. There are also English speaking receptionists who work on rotation basis to cover the day and night shifts.

Ambulance Service

There are two fully equipped ambulances with drivers on 24 hour cover, based in the hospital / resort areas, although we have access to other two ambulances (based in Dalaman and Ortaca) if required for repatriations to Dalaman or transfers to other hospitals outside of the Fethiye area, with a nurse or doctor escort if required.

24 Hour Cover

The night time cover in the hospital is provided either from the Accident and Emergency Service for all specialises and/or the GPs who are centrally based in the 24 hour clinics in Ölüdeniz or Hisarönü. Patients can be transferred to the A & E room by stretcher and there is a four bedded treatment room with facilities for suturing, nebulization, intravenous and oxygen therapy, electrocardiography and cardio defibrillation and there is also provision for the observation of patients admitted for a limited period of time. There are also rental / purchase facilities for equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, bedpans and urinal if required.

Assistance Coordinators

This post was established to improve and expand upon the standard of follow up care, translation and arrangements with insurance companies and tour operators who have their guests attending the hospital for treatment. Three English, German and Spanish speaking staff is covering this post.

Insurance Company Contact and Assistance Services

We have had an effective working relationship with all the medical emergency assistance companies in the UK and other countries for a number of years. The Assistance Coordinator is able to provide relevant patient details and comprehensive medical report, anticipated prognosis and possible repatriation requirements on behalf of not only the medical staff in the hospital, but also on the request of assistance companies who need to access a clear exact medical report in English concerning patients throughout Turkey.

We will also accept accept a guarantee of costs on behalf of the patient if they so wish, provided that they have viable insurance and the assistance company is satisfied that the terms and the conditions of the policy have been met. As such if the patient can provide both their insurance and travel documents we will arrange contact with their assistance company on their behalf. This relieves the patients of the worry of covering their costs from within their holiday budget.

We automatically provide the patients with a referral letter for their GP, x-rays and a fitness to fly certificate if appropriate, as well as making the necessary transfer and wheelchair assistance arrangements at the airport in liaison with the tour operators. We have become known and trusted by the assistance companies in a short period of time and as such are often asked to handle the operational aspect of assistance for them, both from the UK as well as local companies such as tour Assist, Avrasya, Europe Assistance (Marmaris branch) and Inter-partner Assistance, for patients in the Aegean and Mediterranean coastal region, spanning from Istanbul to Mersin.

We also have a good working relationship with the British Consulate in Marmaris and summary reports are issued to the Consulate including details of hospitalized / seriously ill / deceased and repatriated patients.

Strategic Business Planning

This is seen as an integral part of our development and ensures that we provide services in away which meets the needs of our service users. In determining both short and long term aims the organization seeks advice from tour operators, emergency assistance companies, patients and from within our service as a whole.

We are in the process of incorporating a Major Incident plan into the service, so that provision is made in the event of a coach accident or bomb explosion for instance, in order to manage large numbers of casualties effectively as well as providing a mobile callout unit.

Other aspects in tourism

Other developments over the latter years are the sports of parachuting and diving with a choice of several well established centres for both sports. The dive centres all utilize the GP and ESNAF Hospital services for both provide client checks as well as for diving related ailments / incidents and medical checks for the instructors and staff.

Many holiday villages have developed in this region and Lokman Hekim ESNAF Hospital is currently working with most of them.

Services utilised outside of the hospital

These include:
1. CT scanning - there are two CT scanners available in Fethiye that can accommodate brain and total body CT scans.
2. MRI and scintigraphy scans - can be undertaken in either Marmaris (1,5 hours by road) as there are no MRI scanning facilities in Fethiye at present
